3 points are great, but there are still two big concerns

Okay, we won the match v Wolves on Thursday thanks to center back Gabriel Magalhaes. The win is a big deal, and shoots the Gunners into 5th place in the Premier League. With two games in hand, Arsenal is just one point out of fourth place behind West Ham United.

Yes, the Gunners are learning how to gut-out matches, and hold on to the points, however, despite the win v Wolves, there are still two glaring problems Mikel Arteta is yet to fix.

  1. The Arsenal offense has scored just one goal since January 1st.
  2. Red cards have become the norm. Leaving ten men on the field is too dangerous and puts the team at a terrible disadvantage.

Arsenal failed to acquire a big league striker in January, hoping the likes of Martinelli, Lacazette, Nketiah, and Saka would begin filling the net with goals. Obviously, no progress was visible on Thursday. It took a center back to score the game winner.

Regarding red cards. The Gunners have four red cards in their first six matches in 2022. Yes, Martinelli’s two yellow cards were handed out in very quickĀ  succession (which was odd and questionable to say the least), however, at the end of the day the Gunners were down a man for the match’s final 20 minutes with only a one goal lead. Is there something wrong with this team’s discipline? Are the referee’s biased against the Gunners? Why can’t Arteta fix the problem, or are the Arsenal players just too reckless, especially in close games, which is just about every game for us.

Again, I am very thankful and happy we won Thursday’s match. Three points are three points no matter how they are won. But, the two problems mentioned above need to get fixed. We got lucky on Thursday, but at some point our luck will run out.

  1. Spot on. Our team discipline is woeful. Arteta should have focussed on this at the start of the season. Yellow cards are mounting up which will lead to suspensions.

    Dan Roebuck on Arsenal player broadcast of the game said in first half that laca was doing too much running, that’s why he missed the one on one chance late in 2nd half. Tired. If you play with only one striker then either tell them to conserve energy or replace them at 60 or 65 minute. We were lucky we didn’t need a second goal.

    Even ramsdale has been booked for time wasting. Stop the yellows is the first step in stopping reds.

  2. Right, but it’s the same front 4 that were banging in 5 goals per game for 3-4 games just prior to that. It’s not a crisis, just a lull. The team is young now, they won’t be the finished article tomorrow.
