Arsenal made a positive step today with the addition of Mat Ryan to the Gunners goalkeeping club.
The 28-year-old Australian made 124 appearances for Brighton and Hove Albion since joining that club in 2017.
Along with his terrific domestic resume, Ryan has also earned 59 caps playing for the Australian national team.
So, what does this mean? In my opinion, it means Leno will have an experienced and suitable back-up who will hopefully push him in training. Ryan told Arsenal.com, “I’ve never been a goalkeeper where I’ve liked to sit on the bench. I’m sure every goalkeeper says that, but I’ve come here under the circumstances where Bernd has obviously done a great job for the club in his time since he’s arrived and he’s a very top-quality goalkeeper. But I believe also that I’ve shown that in my career until now also and I’m looking to come in here and push him and him push me. Like I said, we’ll try to get the best out of one another and to improve as individuals.”
What more can be said? if his actions live up to his words, than I’ll be a fan of Mat Ryan.
The new goalkeeper will wear shirt #33, and will be with Arsenal at least through the end of this season.
Cheers.
