What started out as a match that looked like Arsenal would dominate the pitch and score plenty of goals, eventually turned into a sh*t show, and the Gunners will return to London with just one point. After two games against lowly Burnley this season, Arsenal have picked up just one of a possible six points. If that doesn’t define the Gunners season so far, than nothing ever will.
Following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s slick early goal, everything looked to be going Mikel Arteta’s way, but then Bernd Leno and Granit Xhaka combined to provide Burnley’s goal of the season, and suddenly the game was level, and ultimately done and dusted. Obviously, Xhaka is not a fan of playing against Burnley, and his curse continued today v The Clarets. The Swiss has now received two red cards and gifted a goal to Burnley in just the last two seasons when playing against this team.
But boy did we have our chances. Auba, Saka and Pepe all missed golden chances in front of the net. And yes, VAR officials totally missed the Burnley handball just before they got the second one right.
Why can’t this club seem to maintain any type of consistency match-to-match. The peaks and valleys we have been through this season have been discouraging to watch. They’ll have a run of several good games, followed by a collapse. I’m not sure I have seen this happen to this degree before? Have any of you?
However, on the brighter side of things, it was good to see Willian have another good performance, and of course it was wonderful to see Calum Chambers get a full 90-minute run-out at Turf Moor.
But with that said, it was still painful, frustrating and just downright maddening to see this club give away more points in the Premier League. The Gunners remain 10th in the PL, with any hopes of qualifying for next season’s European competitions through the Premier League slowly slipping further away.
No cheers today.
