Is Mikel Arteta truly on the hot seat? After two horrible Premier League defeats where his side failed to score a goal, the Arsenal manager is facing increasing pressure, if not from his owner or board, he sure is getting it from club supporters and the media.
Since Arteta managed his first Arsenal match on December 26, 2019, the former Arsenal player has recorded 47 wins, 16 draws and 25 defeats. That’s a .534 winning percentage. The Gunners have also finished 8th in back-to-back Premier League seasons under his leadership. This is the first season the Gunners have not played in a European competition since the Romans invaded the island in 43 CE. In all honesty, we have seen nothing but mediocrity, and little improvement. Actually, this club is on a downward slide.
I truly feel that I have given this manager every benefit of the doubt. Even now, I still have hopes he can possibly resurrect this season once he gets all of his players healthy, available and back on the pitch. However, if things don’t greatly improve by November 1st, I would send him packing.
The gambling website betting.betfair lists Arteta at 3/1 odds to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season. I think I would take that bet.
The club has spent over $178.5-million (USD) this summer in the transfer market, which is tops among all worldwide football clubs. I’m sure the Kroenkes will want to see a quick return on their large financial investment.
Former Scottish player and manager, turned Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness put it into perspective after Sunday’s defeat, “I look at this Arsenal team and I think it might be a team for the next manager. Time is not your friend when you’re a manager.”
A win v West Bromwich Albion would be a huge boost for everyone before heading to Manchester City on Saturday to face the defending league champions, however, if the Gunners lose both of these matches, I think the screws will be turned extremely tight on Arteta and his entire backroom staff. The clock is already ticking…
