I have to tell you I was pleasantly surprised at how well the Gunners played on Saturday, especially with a starting XI that had never set foot on the pitch together…not ever!
Since I was out of town at the beach, I had to watch the match on my cellphone, which in itself is a challenge, but nevertheless, it worked out okay.
Now, Arsenal should have scored more goals, no doubt. The chances were there, and the creativity was there, however, once again their ability to finish is still a mystery. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got his first Premier League goal of the season, and so did Arsenal. This was really something to cheer about, but remember, it was also the club’s fourth Premier League match of the young season. Currently, Arsenal is averaging 0.25 goals per game in the league.
Anyway, with that aside, there are some very strong performances to note. Really, a lot of very strong performances to note.
Aaron Ramsdale – Had great energy and communication, plus a very strong command of the net.
Ben White and Gabriel – Making their first start together, the duo looked to be just what the doctor ordered going forward. White’s passing was superb from the back.
Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu – Finally, Arsenal has a fullback combo that will rule the sidelines and create opponents headaches. Tomiyasu was terrific in his Arsenal debut, especially after having only one training session with his teammates.
Martin Odegaard, Ainsley-Maitland-Niles and Sambi Lokonga – This midfield machine did well. There was nothing brilliant about the threesome’s play other than they played well together, and kept pushing the ball forward.
Bukayo Saka, Pierre-Emerick Abuameyang, Nicolas Pepe – This front three was a pain in the neck a lot for Norwich City. Auba got the goal but Saka and Pepe both worked hard all day, too.
Cedric Soares, Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe – The subs all made their contribution as well, and helped the Gunners secure both the win and the clean sheet. It was great to see Partey back on the pitch.
So, now we should all have a little confidence in this squad going forward. Burnley should be the perfect “next match” for Arsenal. Our lads need a match like Burnley where they can continue to learn and understand each other on the pitch. I would be very concerned if a Tottenham or a Chelsea was our next opponent. Arsenal needs a little breathing room to grow together to develop confidence in themselves and each other, as well as in Mikel Arteta’s tactics and goals.
For me, it feels good to have a win to discuss for a change, however, this will be a very long season ahead. This club will provide some moments of joy, as well as moments of pain, that’s for sure. But, as long as they continue to grow as a team, I’ll be okay knowing better days are ahead.

Takehiro Tomiyasu has returned to full training with the first team after recovering from a knee injury.
