Arsenal must begin getting results v the “Big 5 ” starting on Saturday

Since Mikel Arteta took over as manager of Arsenal, the Spaniard has a record of 11 wins, 3 draws and 13 defeats in all competitions against the “Big 5” clubs of Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool.

This season, his record is a poor 1-0-6 against those same clubs. The Gunners lost to Chelsea 0-2, Man City 0-5, Liverpool 0-4 and Man United 2-3. Our only “Big 5” win was a North London Derby victory over Tottenham, 3-1.

As I have written in previous posts, I will be a firm believer in the Arteta Project once his team begins to beat the “Big 5” clubs on a regular basis, and in the games they don’t win, they need to be at least competitive until the final whistle.

Currently, our lads are on a very nice win streak, winning five in a row in all competitions with a 19-2 goal margin.

But now the calendar changes to 2022, and waiting to welcome in the New Year for Arsenal will be the Premier League’s leader, Manchester City. This will be a mammoth test for the Gunners to see how far they really have progressed since the thrashing they took at the Etihad on August 28th.

A win, or even a draw on Saturday, could mark the beginning of real belief in the Arteta Project. However, Arsenal will need to accomplish several things in order to secure points from this match. 1) If you jump a goal ahead or fall a goal behind – DON’T PANIC! 2) Avoid foolish passes into the middle of the pitch in our front third. 3) Play on your front foot and follow the game plan laid out by the coaching staff. 4) Don’t put the entire game on the shoulders of Bukayo Saka or Aaron Ramsdale. Play as equals, with equal responsibilities. And 5) Know the entire stadium will be rocking at full voice throughout the match to give you that extra incentive to push forward!

Unfortunately, the boss will be at home watching the match on TV as he recovers from COVID-19, again. However, in his absence, we must have faith in his backroom staff to guide this squad to a positive result on Saturday.

As we start a New Year, anything is possible. So let’s hope our match v Man City will be the beginning of bigger things to come!
