It happens every year, just like taxes, three clubs from the English championship are promoted to the Premier League, while three current Premier League clubs are relegated to the second tier of English football once the season ends.
As you know, the first and second place finishers automatically gain promotion, while clubs finishing third through sixth have a playoff to determine the third and final promotion spot. With that said, let’s take a look at what is happening in the Championship as their season has reached the halfway point.
As is stands today, the top six spots in the Championship table feature clubs that are very familiar to the Premier League.
Bournemouth is currently first (49), Fulham second (48), Blackburn Rovers third (46), West Brom Albion fourth (42), QPR fifth (41) and Huddersfield Town is sixth (40).
Middlesbrough (39), Stoke City (35), Nottingham Forest (34) and Coventry City (34) round out the top ten.
As Arsenal recently rediscovered, Championship clubs can compete against the big boys. Remember Sunday and Nottingham Forest?
The top of the pack of this year’s promoted clubs is Brentford, who currently stands 13th in the Premier League. The Bees have been fairly successful this season, including a 2-0 defeat of Arsenal in the season opener, a 3-3 draw with Liverpool, plus wins over West Ham United and Aston Villa.
The other two clubs promoted this season are Watford, who is currently 17th and Norwich City, who is seriously struggling in 20th. Ironically, it was the Canaries who won least season’s Championship with an astounding 97 points, 10 points better than Brentford.
As this season begins to wind down, pay attention to the what’s going on in the Championship, because we will see three of these clubs on our fixture list next season.
My personal choices are Fulham, QPR and Blackburn Rovers.
