Arsenal is in a strong position with games in hand

The Gunners were able to score a 2-1 win over a very defensively relentless Brentford Bees club on Saturday.

Arsenal kept pounding and pounding the visitors defensive wall throughout the match, even controlling the ball 80% of the time in the first 45 minutes of the game.

Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka scored the first and second goals for the home club, then hung on to defeat the Bees, 2-1.

From the start of the match the Gunners were on their front foot, with slick passing, opportunistic runs and several chances to score. However, once again, our club’s desperate need for a big, strong striker to dominate the center of the penalty box was apparent.

Even so, Alexandre Lacazette played his heart out on Saturday. I’m not sure how many saw this, but right before the second whistle by Jon Moss to start the second half, Laca could be seen on camera throwing up, twice. To me, the Frenchman also doubled-over occasionally during stoppage of play, and really looked totally exhausted when he came off the pitch for Eddie Nketiah late in the game. If Lacazette was indeed sick, we owe him a great deal of respect and admiration for putting in a really strong shit on Saturday, especially if he was playing ill.

Here’s some our Arsenal’s statistics from the match v Brentford: 66% of possession, 14 corner kicks, 24 shots, 8 shots on target, 2 goals and 3 points.

Also, there were four, count them four VAR decisions that went against Mikel Arteta’s side. That seems to be the story of our season with VAR, right?

So, where does Saturday’s result put the Gunners in the chase for a Champions League spot?

8 points out of 3rd behind Chelsea, but Arsenal has 2 games in hand.

4 points out of 4th place behind Manchester United, but Arsenal has 3 games in hand.

Arsenal is even on points with West Ham United, and are just one goal behind the Hammers in goal differential. Arsenal also has 3 games in hand. West Ham is 5th, Arsenal is currently 6th.

Arsenal has 15 Premier League matches remaining, including a make-up tilt v Wolves at home on Thursday. Alexandre Lacazette said last week that every match is critical to earning a spot in the Champions League. He is spot on!

I couldn’t agree more.
