Alexandre Lacazette wants to plays Champions League football next season. He recently was quoted as saying, “I am in discussions with a lot of clubs. I am open. I want to play in Europe, it’s been a long time since I played in the Champions League. I’m missing it.”
That’s great, the 30-year-old Lacazette wants to play Champions League football.
If memory serves me right, isn’t Arsenal in the middle of a rather intense fight for Champions League football? Isn’t the Frenchman still a part of this team, and isn’t there a chance he could remain with Arsenal beyond this season?
I get the biggest kick out of players who say they want to play for a club in the Champions League, when their current job is to help their club win matches to get to the Champions League. Oh I see, he wants to play in the big time, but he doesn’t want to put the work in to getting to the big time. He wants to ride in on others coat tails. Am I right?
Now, I don’t blame him wanting to look at other clubs since his contract is running down, however, what does upset me is the fact he talks about it to the media, while the current season is still being played. Come on Laca, show some respect to your club and its supporters.
Mikel Arteta said this during his Tuesday press conference, “Well, his contract situation allows him to make the decision about the future. We have expressed clearly what our intention is, to speak in the summer when we know where we are and what we’re going to do in the future together, and for the rest I just want him fully focused on his duty, which is now defending Arsenal in the best possible way like he’s done all the time when he’s been with us, and that’s why he’s been wearing the armband of this football club, so that’s a big risk. The contract starts and ends with the expiration date that you have agreed on the day that you put the pen down, and then you have to live with the consequences of that. That’s the reality of the contract that he has and the commitment and the duty he has with the football club. He doesn’t need to tell me what he does in his own life but he has and we’ve discussed that and he’s entitled to do that. Then has a duty to do his best here.”
This season Lacazette has made appearances in 31 Arsenal matches in all competitions. He has scored just 6 goals, 4 in the Premier League and 2 in the Carabao Cup.
These are not very impressive numbers for a man who thinks he is a Champions League caliber striker. SO, what he needs to do is to work hard for Arsenal, help the Gunners get back into the Champions League by scoring goals, and then sit down with Arteta and Edu at the end of the season and see what happens.
Arteta said. “That is the agreement that we made with him. That was our position, and our position remains the same – that this is what we are going to do. The risk of that happening was always there since the moment we made that decision. Then it’s up to him because it’s not about us or him, it’s about both parties.”
I have always been a Lacazette fan, however, it’s now time for him to stop the talking and score some goals.
