Two of Arsenal’s stars who play on England’s national women’s team, Leah Williamson and Beth Mead, are two reasons why England are Champions of Europe, beating Germany, 2-1 in added extra time to capture the 2022 Euros title!
Williamson, the England captain, and Mead, the tournament Golden Boot winner, as well as MVP, represented their nation and their club with great pride throughout the tournament. Williamson was the glue on the defensive end, and Mead provided the punch on the offensive end, ultimately helping their teammates to an undefeated Euro 2022 tournament and the trophy.
England’s Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly scored the goals in the Final, but it was a team effort by manager Sarina Wiegman’s side that provided the difference, especially in the 30-minutes of added extra time. With many legs beginning to fatigue, Wiegman made the necessary substitutions that provided England with the initiative and fresh legs to push for the win.
After the match Williamson said, “I just can’t stop crying. We talk, we talk, and we talk, and we finally have done it. You know what, the kids are right. This is the proudest moment of my life. I’m so proud to be English.”
Queen Elizabeth and Prince William both commented on social media how proud the English country is of their championship team, and how this victory will inspire girls and women for years to come.
This was England’s first win at a major tournament. The Lionesses were Euro runners-up in 1984 and 2009, and took third in the World Cup in 2015.
What a great day for England, and for women’s football!
Congratulations, and cheers!.
