Arsenal played better than the final score indicated. Even with a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United today at Old Treaffrod, the Gunners remain on top of the Premier League table. And after six matches played, that’s a sterling accomplishment for Arteta and his men.
Arsenal started the match on the back foot, and of course, Gabriel Martinelli was robbed of a goal by VAR, but at the end of the day it was the Red Devils counter attack that put the Gunners in the lost column today.
Marcus Rashford rejuvenated his Man U career with two well-earned goals. Unfortunately, for us, but fortunately for Rashford, the Gunners defense made it too easy.
Obviously, defending the counter needs some, because every man and his brother will be work harder to counter attack Arsenal in future matches.
Even though we lost the match, the squad played very hard, and never gave up. That credit goes to Arteta and his team leaders for keeping the players mentally in the match, even when the score line looked bleak.
Also, hats off to Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale and Alex Zinchenko for bouncing back from injuries to play. I would have kept Kieran Tierney in the starting line-up since the Scotsman had trained all week., and Zinchenko has not.
So, maybe a lose isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Games like this can serve as a wake-up call to team deficiencies, and also bring the squad back down to earth following a five game wining streak.
Bottom line, Arsenal lost the game, but there are so many to go, including a trip to Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday to open Europe League group stage competition.
Hopefully, Arteta will rest some of his key players in order to have them fit for Sunday’s showdown at home v Everton.
No cheers today, but there will be many better days are ahead!
