The 2-2 draw v Sporting puts the Gunners in good shape for the 2nd leg

Okay, it wasn’t the result we wanted in Lisbon, however, the 2-2 draw v Sporting CP does leave the Gunners in good shape for the second leg rematch next Thursday.

Why, you ask? First of all, the game will be at Emirates Stadium in front of a loud and very supportive crowd. Second, Mikel Arteta will look at Thursday’s game tape and will make tactical adjustments for the 2nd leg. And three, I would expect the boss to field his regular starting XI to open the match.

Here’s what Arteta had to say after Thursday’s 2-2 draw against the Portuguese side,  “We had periods in the game where we were in a lot of control, but we lacked a little bit of strength in the final third because obviously we had to adjust today with the players we did not have available. I think we conceded two very poor goals that we have to do better on and show much more determination to defend our box in those moments. At that level away from home, it puts the tie in a really difficult position but we managed to react. Also, Arsenal needs to quickly eliminate giving away too many sloppy goals on counter attacks and corner kicks. This is key to their immediate success.

All attention must now switch to Fulham. The Cottagers are playing well, losing only one Premier League match since January 23rd. Former Arsenal players Willian and Bernd Leno will lead the charge on Sunday for the home team.
