What’s missing from the Arsenal arsenal?

The Gunners have scored 23 goals in 12 matches this season. However, Arsenal has had 9 wins and 2 draws from those 12 games. It’s hard to complain too much about your club’s performances when the record is that good, however, there is always room for improvement.

In goal, the Gunners have two top notch keepers.

On defense, the back line is superb, though Alex Zinchenko could be stronger on the defensive end.

In the midfield, there is a plethora of talent to supply the offensive engine, especially Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

On the wings, again Arsenal is very strong with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, plus there is solid back-up as well.

However, in the #9 position, something seems to be missing. What is that? GOALS!

Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus are very good strikers, however, their rate for scoring goals through 12 matches this season is not what we expect from them.

Combined, the two strikers have scored 5 of the 23 total team goals. That return on investment is far too small for this club to be successful in the long run this season. 5 should be at least 8-10, and that’s being conservative.

As a club, the Gunners are averaging 1.9 goals per game in all competitions. Bukaya Saka and Martin Odegaard has accounted for 9 of those goals.

The rumor mill is hot on the Gunners making a run for Brentford’s Ivan Toney in January. The 27-year-old Englishman is currently on suspension by the FA for violating their gambling laws. He will be allowed to return to the pitch on January 17, 2024.

At Brentford, Toney has 63 goals in 111 appearances. He also has played for the England National Team.

Obviously, Toney would bring along baggage from his past. Would the Gunners have enough faith in Toney to sign him to a big contract knowing he has, or has had, a gambling problem? Is the goal production worth taking that risk, or is everyone allowed a second chance?

For me, this will be a tough decision, and one the Arsenal front offices will need to deal with collectively.

It would be great to see Jesus and Nketiah begin to deliver more goals in a more consistent fashion, however, whether it’s Ivan Toney or someone else, the Gunners need more goals from the striker position to take some pressure off the Arsenal defense.

COYG!
