Arsenal currently has recorded 13 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats thus far in their 2023/2024 campaign. The club is 3rd in the Premier League, and 1st in Group B of the Champions League.
One would have to say this has been a very good beginning to the season.
However, before we get too excited, there are concerns that need to be addressed, and ultimately handled if this club has any serious desires to win a big piece of silverware by the end of this season.
First on the list is finding more consistency in goal scoring. Most football experts I have been reading say Arsenal needs a physically bigger striker. Not to be ignored, Gabriel Jesus has shown some brilliance this season when he’s available to play, and Eddie Nketiah had a hat-trick against Sheffield United just a few weeks ago. At the end of the day, both men are capable, but consistently not producing enough goals. This is putting too much pressure on a defense that is top-notch, but also vulnerable at times. The Gunners need to bring in a striker in January – if a good one is available at a fair price.
Second, Mikel Arteta needs to decide what he is going to do with Kai Havertz. At this point of the season, Haveretz has started 12 matches for the club in all competitions. He has just one goal and one assist. With Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard holding down the other two midfield slots, it’s apparent Arsenal needs to find a solid man to complete the trio. Fabio Vieira has shown some promise in that spot, but again, he has not been consistent. I believe Emile Smith Rowe could fill the bill when he returns from injury, or even moving Alex Zinchenko into a midfield position. Whatever Arteta decides to do, he needs to do it soon because Havertz isn’t getting the job done game-in and game-out.
Third, what is the boss going to do with Aaron Ramsdale? The Gunners #2 goalkeeper is frustrated following his demotion after David Reyes joined the club. Was Arteta’s treatment of Ramsdale fair? Will we ever get the total story? Whatever happens, Ramsdale desires games. He will definitely start on November 25th v Brentford because Reyes is on loan from the Bees and won’t be allowed to play. Beyond that, will we only see Ramsdale between the posts in FA Cup matches? This needs to be resolved before it becomes more of a distraction. Play him or let him go.
Obviously, no club is perfect, and no season goes by without some complications. However, during the International break, Aretea and his staff needs to begin addressing these issues before there is negative impact on the season.
