The 2023/2024 season is quickly moving towards the halfway mark and things are beginning to take shape on all fronts.
Let’s begin with the Premier League. Arsenal are currently in 2nd place behind Liverpool. The Gunners trail by only a single point and are on the verge of having a terrific campaign, if, and only if, the squad can remain healthy and fresh. Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and now Aston Villa, will all be in the fight for the league title. I predict it will take at least 90 points to win the trophy. That means Arsenal need to accumulate 54 points in their remaining 22 league matches, or 2.45 points per game. This will also include Mikel Arteta’s lads winning all of the matches they “should” win against the bottom-half clubs on the league table.
Regarding the Champions League, Arsenal has come through at the top of the Group B table. The Round of 16 drawing will been on December 18th. This competition will be a tall order for the club. The Gunners are in the middle of a very difficult Premier League fixture list, and the squad does lack some depth at key positions, especially in an injury depleted midfield. The good news is that the Round of 16 will be played in January when Arsenal’s game count is a little lower. Beyond that, things will get busy, fast and furious.
On a side note, it was great to see the B+ Squad have such a solid match on Tuesday v PSV. The squad played with a lot of pace and confidence v a very good PSV squad who hasn’t lost at home in two seasons.
And of course, let’s not forget the FA Cup 3rd Round which begins in January as well. The Gunners have drawn Liverpool at home on the 7th. This competition is very importnt to the Arsenal club, so I predict Arteta will field his best team in order to advance through this great and historical competition.
So, with the Premier League, the Champions League and FA Cup all heating up, let the game begins. It will be very interesting to see how Arteta rotates his squad in the 2nd half of the season. As we all well remember, this is one of the central reasons the Gunners failed to win the Premier League title last season. The team just flat out ran out of gas. I’m sure Arteta and his staff are more than aware of that scenario.
I still believe we can win the Premier League and the FA Cup this season. That’s my early, preseason prediction, and one I’m willing to stand by,
