The other day I was going through Twitter and I found a post on @thearsenalgalaxy that caught my attention. The post featured a potential Arsenal line-up for the 2020-2021 season that I found both interesting and intriguing.
Here is what they proposed, a 4-4-2 set-up…
Goalkeeper – Bernd Leno
Defenders – Keiran Tierney, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, Hector Bellerin
Midfielders – Thomas Partey, Houssem Aouar
Wingers – Bukayo Saka, Nicolas Pepe
Forwards – Gabriel Martinelli, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
First things first. We would need to renew Aubameyang and Saka, then get Partey, Upamecano and Aouar under contract. There are a lot of names flying around the Arsenal transfer rumor mill right now, but for me, Partey and Upamecano are the most interesting.
I contacted a good friend of mine who is actually the guy how originally got me hooked on football and the Arsenal football club. Here are his thoughts on this line-up scenario…
“Well, for starters I hope we can keep Auba, but my first question would be about depth. Can we play similar to this system when there is schedule congestion, cup games, and the like. And, this line-up basically is “out with the old, in with the new.” If you throw the kids out there in the Premiership they will get crushed at times and lose confidence. Something I don’t think is a good idea. I think we all want to see what the kids can do but we need to be careful about throwing then to the wolves. I am trying to think of what I’d choose as a line-up. I would go more with youth alongside the veteran but we have to commit to playing some of the younger guys to see what they have.”
To me his opinion carries a lot of weight. I would agree we would need to mix-in senior players as well, however, I also think Leno, Bellerin, Pepe and Aubameyang could provide the leadership and experience my friend is talking about. For me, it’s time for Mikel Arteta to forge a new breed for Arsenal. As much as we like some of the current players, they haven’t delivered what we they need to be consistently successful.
Thoughts?
Now, I know this XI can’t play every match. We still need a strong supply of back-up players to be mixed in and out of the team during the season. That will be the content for my next post.
