Following today’s UEFA video conference, the European domestics leagues are left holding the bag, forced to make their own decisions regarding how qualifications for next season’s European tournaments are determined.
UEFA said in a statement,”It would be preferable that suspended domestic competitions would restart with a different format in a manner which would still facilitate clubs to qualify on sporting merit. Sporting merit should be based on objective and non-discriminatory principles.”
UEFA kept their right to refuse any club’s entry into one of the European tournaments if there appears to be any “public perception of unfairness.”
Bottom line, the Premier League is now tasked with determining how their league can finish the 2019-2020 season in a manner that is fair and equitable to all of the 20 clubs. UEFA really wants the PL to finish their season, however, the question remains, what is fair and equitable if all of the 92 remaining league matches can not be played? UEFA mentioned that a “different format” could then be used. Does this mean some sort of tournament or mini-league format would be implemented to boil down the league’s final standings? Would this allow a league champion be crowned, could the Champions League and Europa League positions be determined, and could relegation to the Championship also be set?
Another idea was floated at the meeting, this one using a “points per game” formula to determine this season’s final table. This formula could potentially be used if the season is cancelled. By using this formula, Arsenal would sneak into the Europa League and leave Tottenham on the outside looking in, 1.429 to 1.414!
Still, in my opinion, without playing all of the remaining 92 games, it will be hard to reach UEFA’s threshold of “objective and non-discriminatory.”
Anyway you shake it, this is a real brain buster. I’m sure the Premier League has many smart people huddling together (6′ feet apart) to figure out the best answers to all of questions. I, for one still think this season should be ended, allowing the population to get healthy and stay healthy, plus give our medical community more time to solve the COVID-19 riddle, then regroup for 2020-2021.
Does anyone really want to look down the the barrel at the coronavirus again? I think not.
