Reports from the UK are not painting a pretty picture for Mesut Ozil. Once a shining star on the German national team and Real Madrid, the 30-year-old (31 next week) has been regularly dropped from Unai Emery’s first team selections. Ozil himself has reportedly admitted he might not play another game for Arsenal.
For several weeks we have been wondering what his final outcome will be as an Arsenal player. Well, now it appears he might be on the block to be loaned to Fenerbahce in January. The Mirror, The Guardian and Daily Mail newspapers in London are all reporting Arsenal has opened talks with the Turkish club to send Ozil back to his former side during the next transfer window. The papers also report Arsenal are prepared to pay part of the midfielder’s $428,000 per week wages. There have also been rumors of Ozil going to Galatasaray or even to the MLS here in the US.
Why has the German been put on the back burner by Emery? Obviously, he favors the younger, more lively and impressionable players like Dani Ceballos and Joe Willock. Emery has repeatedly said “there are other players who deserve to play more.”
The former World Cup winner has said he loves playing for Arsenal and living in the city of London. He was also a locker room choice as one of the squad’s 5 captains this season.
So what next for #10? The club has a minimum of 17 games to play between now and the end of the year. We are not currently thick with creative playmakers so you would have to think Mesut might get some PT here and there to help fill the gaps during a very busy list of fixtures.
During his time in London Ozil has totaled the following stats for Arsenal: 253 games played – 43 goals scored – 74 goals assisted – 15,145 mins. played
