Premier League will be on the outside looking in at next week’s European club finals

After dominating the finals last season in both the Champions League and the Europa League, the Premier League has officially bowed out of European competition for the 2019-2020 season.

Last season, the Premier League was “King of the Hill” as Liverpool played Tottenham in the Champions League final, and Arsenal matched-up against Chelsea in the Europa League final.

With Manchester United’s defeat yesterday to Sevilla in the UCL semifinals, England’s top divisions clubs can only be spectators for this season’s top European club championships.

Yes, this season is a totally different story, and frankly one the Premier League’s brass should be concerned about.

To get to this miserable conclusion, the defending UCL cup holders, Liverpool, bombed out in the Round of 16, ending any hopes for a repeat. Tottenham and Chelsea also were eliminated in the UCL’s Round of 16. Arsenal was sent packing after being eliminated from the Europa League’s Round of 32, while Wolves made it to the UEL’s quarterfinals before being knocked out.

Teams dig and claw all season long to earn these precious few spots in the European competitions, so it’s tough to see no Premier League representation in either final, however, a new campaign will kick-off just a few days after this season’s Champions League and Europa League champions are crowned.

There won’t be a lot of time to cry and moan about the past.

Maybe next year’s European club finals will look a little different.
