Fulham 0 – ARSENAL 3
Now, let’s don’t get too excited just yet, because it was Fulham we faced today, however, Arsenal they show they are a different club from a year ago!
This was a great team win, back by several solid, individual performances!
What I expected…
Arsenal would come away with the 3 points, and they did.
Willian would prove his value to the club, and he did. (3 assists)
Aubameyang would score a goal, and he did.
Leno would be in goal, and he was. (clean sheet)
Arsenal would play a back three, and they did.
Martinez would be MIA, and he was.
What I didn’t expect…
Saliba to be left off the team sheet, and he was.
Ceballos to be a sub, and he was.
Gabriel to start, and he did. (scored a goal)
Elneny to start, and he did.
A pre-match dust-up between Ceballos and Nketiah, and there was.
Not to see Saka on the pitch today, and we didn’t.
Ozil to be left off the team sheet, and he was.
For me, the Man of the Match was Willian. The pass he dropped into Aubameyang’s feet for the captain’s goal was world class! This man will make a huge difference to the Gunners’ offense this season. Barring any injury to Willian, Pepe will not see a lot of playing time this season in Premier League games.
Right behind Willian for Man of the Match honors would be Gabriel. Following a shaky start, the young Brazilian played like a seasoned veteran and put in a terrific performance, plus scoring a wonderful goal off Willian’s corner kick delivery.
Let’s also pour some praise on Lacazette, Holding, Bellerin and Elneny. Aubameyang gave his usual top-shelf performance, while Tierney and Xhaka contributed as needed.
Xhaka left the game with an ankle injury, that hopefully, will only be a minor setback for the Swiss international.
The one negative takeaway I have following today’s match is Arsenal’s glaring need for a creative midfielder. Houssem Aouar did not play in Lyon’s match on Friday v Bordeaux, so maybe this is a sign a serious deal for a transfer is in the works at Arsenal HQ.
Next week, the Gunners’ have their home opener v West Ham United. Following that encounter, things get very real as Arsenal face Leicester City, Sheffield United, Manchester City and Manchester United all in October. Plus, throw in a possible Carabao Cup 4th round game, and two Europa League group stage matches just to make October even more interesting!
There should be a few more comings and goings in the week ahead at the Emirates. Having Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sign a new contract would be the biggest news of all! Stay tuned!
To wrap this up, let’s pass along a big pat on the back to Mikel Arteta and his Gunners for an awesome start to the season!
