Mikel Arteta battled the coronavirus during the shutdown lat spring, now two of his players face the same battle in the days ahead.
Mo Elneny and Sead Kolasinac have both tested positive with COVID-19 while on duty with their national teams. Obviously, neither player will be available for action this Sunday at Leeds United. We wish them both speedy recoveries.
That news was bad enough, however, the Gunners boss now has to deal with circumstances surrounding Willian and his holiday in the UAE. It’s not clear if Willian flew to Dubai during the international break without the club’s permission, however, it does appear Willian decided to take the holiday once he was left off the Brazilian national team for their World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela and Uruguay.
According to The Telegraph, Willian will have to take a COVID-19 test and return a negative result before resuming training with the Gunners, although he does not have to self-isolate now he is back in the UK.
Where this gets sticky for Willian is that his decision to leave the country was an apparent breach of the UK government’s guidance on traveling abroad during the second UK lockdown. What was Willian thinking? Didn’t he know his actions could jeopardize the team? Doesn’t he know we are in the midst of a worldwide pandemic and that he wasn’t allowed to leave England?
Recently, Willian has been singing the praises of Arteta in the press, now it will be interesting to hear what Arteta has to say about Willian following his recent getaway to Dubai.
This will also not further the supporters’ love for the player. Since coming to Arsenal, Willian has basically fizzled after supplying three assists in the Premier League opener for Arsenal at Fulham.
So, potentially, Arteta could be without Kolasinc, Willian, Elneny and maybe Partey this weekend. There are still a few international matches to be played today that includes Arsenal players. Let’s hope they all return to north London healthy and fit and ready to play on Sunday.
This is a crucial time during the season for the Gunners, so Arteta needs all hands on deck.
