Okay, okay, we lost the match v Liverpool, however, in my opinion, Arsenal was the better team for the majority of the 90 minutes. Now I know this sounds crazy because we lost the game, however, compared to where the Gunners were during the first meeting with Liverpool in November, Mikel Arteta has brought his team miles and miles since then.
Two costly errors, and two missed golden opportunities to score cost ultimately Arsenal the game. Statistically, Arsenal matched the Reds toe-to-toe, but obviously failed in the one statistic that really counts, goals scored.
My hat is off to the Arsenal players who ran their socks off on Wednesday at Emirates Stadium. Special kudos to Gabriel Martinelli who was pure magic on the pitch. The Gunners should not hang their heads, because they gave one of the world’s best football club a real run for their money, and have now closed the gap since the 4-0 disaster four months ago at Anfield.
So, it goes without saying, Arsenal is not a Top 2 team just yet. We still have a long way to go to compete consistently at the level of Manchester City and Liverpool. Remember, we still have the youngest squad in the Premier League. With more time together, more experience in these types of games, and more patience from the supporters, I think Arteta will put these men on the path to ultimate successes, including a 4th place finish this season. No doubt about it!

I’ve never seen atmosphere like this, that’s the reality. From box to box, we were at least level or better, but in the boxes, that’s where they won the game.”
Pundits such as TV personality Piers Morgan and the Daily Mails’ Matt Barlow remain critical of Arteta’s process. However, it only matters if the players buy into his “process.” There are eleven matches to go this season. Four of those matches are against teams competing with Arsenal for a Top 3 or Top 4 finish. This run-in, and those games, will ultimately define our season, and even more importantly, will the Gunners bounce back v Aston Cilla on Saturday at Villa Park? In my opinion, this will be the big test. We will learn a lot about the character of this team on Saturday.
Wednesday was disappointing, however, the Gunners need to move past this match, keep their heads up, and get ready for a very stern test in just a few days time!
