April has been a brutal month for the Arsenal Football Club and its supporters. Three straight defeats to clubs the Gunners should have beaten with nine points slipping through Mikel Arteta’s fingers.
This is not the picture we had hoped to paint month. Expectations were running high after a string of terrific performances in February and Match. Everything was looking rosy, including Arteta voted the league’s manager of the month for March. However, since then the Gunners have hit the skids, scoring only one goal in theta last three matches.
What happened? Can we attribute these losses to the absences of Kieran Tierney, Thomas Partey and Takehiro Tomiyasu? Obviously. the loss of these three key players has not helped our cause, however, what this has showed to all of us is how thin is Arsenal’s bench. If you look at Saturday’s substitute list you see the names of Omari Hutchinson, Zac Swanson and Migual Azeez. No offense to these young men, however, these are not the names you want to see on your bench when fighting for a Champions League position. Am I right, or am I wrong?
Arteta and Edu have stripped this squad to the bare bones without thinking of the potential consequences major injuries to key players could create. But, here we are.
The other issue is the continuing inability to put balls into the net. Arsenal had four shots on target v Southampton. Again, the chances were there, but the ability to finish those chances was not there.
Finally, Arteta needs make some big decisions before facing Chelsea on Wednesday, beginning with left back, moving into midfield, and finishing with striker. also, he should consider bringing Rob Holding into the mix on Wednesday. Gabriel is not playing his best football right now, so maybe a rest would do him some good.
With the daunting fixture list facing the Gunners, I would have to say Champions League football is looking less likely by the day. It will take a miraculous turn of events for this club to regroup and beat the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham United. However, with the roller coaster season and unexpected results we have endured so far, anything is possible.
All we can do is keep the faith, and hope for the best.
