Are we expecting too much from Declan Rice?

Are we expecting too much from Declan Rice? Has he become the designated savior of the Arsenal Football Club? Is it his responsibility to put the Gunners on his shoulders and take the club to the promised land?

There have been times when I believe all of this to be true. The pundits, writers and commentaries have put a golden crown on his head and have almost labelled him as the second coming of Patrick Vieira.

Yes, Declan Rice is a world-class midfielder. Yes, he is an accomplished player and proven leader, and yes, he has most certainly improved our club, and has brightened its future by joining the Gunners from West Ham United.

Rice is obviously off to a good start in north London. He was named the club’s Player of the Month for August, and has been nominated for the FIFA Men’s Player Award. He also scored the winning goal v Manchester United, which only further enhanced his status with the Arsenal supporters

Yet, we must remember he is still human, and still a young man. He will surely make his share of mistakes, and as he has already proven, he will also produce his share of joy.

Of course, for the money spent to acquire him, our expectations are going to be high, however, let’s give him a chance to grow, to get more acclimated to the Arteta system and to continue to prove his worth on the football pitch before our expectations surpass his current capabilities.

If the lad has a poor game, or makes a few mistakes down the road, please remember he will succeed many more times than he will fail. Our expectations should be high, but not unrealistic.

If we give Declan Rice our full support and backing, he will succeed, and he will take this club to the promised land.

Cheers.

  1. Ben, I posted this clip on September 4th. Thanks for reading!

There are a lot of opinions about Kai Havertz after the first four games in the Premier League. Most of those opinion are negative, a few are positive and there are still people on the fence. I am on the fence but leaning to the positive side. Havertz is coming into a new club, with a new system, new tactics, new teammates and a new manager. He is playing as a midfielder, while at Chelsea he played more as a winger or false nine. Yes, there are going to be some learning curves, and yes, I think he will greatly improve as the season moves on. My recommendation to Mikel Arteta is to give him more time in training before putting him back ion the starting XI. Fabio Vieira is better suited for Havertz’s role at this point in the season. I will give Havertz a C after four games.
