Are we focusing on the wrong priorities?

Would the Premier League really go to the extreme and finish the season playing matches behind closed doors?
There are several “theories” floating around the UK saying that is possible.

According to the Daily Mail, the league is considering to re-start matches on May 1st, and finish on July 12th finish. All games would be played with no supporters, however, the matches would be televised.

There has also been a report the PL would consider quarantining all of its players and support staff in COVID-19 cleansed hotels, playing games in neutral facilities, m again with no spectators, only TV.

If either one of these “theories” are true, the Premier League would be a able to accomplish their goals of finishing the season, handing the title and trophy to Liverpool, and securing the TV rights money. I understand the politics and the financials, but at the end of the day does any of this really make sense?

I have been debating this back and forth with a few friends, and with my self over and over again. This is the ultimate Catch-22. Damed if you do, damned if you don’t. I would love to see the Premier League season come to a complete 38 game finish, I really would. Arsenal was just getting their legs under them and beginning to gain on the clubs ahead of them in the table. I think the conclusion of this season would have the potential to be really dramatic and exciting. BUT, are we putting our focus on the wrong things, while missing the big picture?

Let’s put this entire mess into perspective. It’s so utterly unfortunate this pandemic ever happened. As a result, thousands of people have died, and hundreds of thousands more are currently sick with the coronavirus. This should be our #1 concern, not worrying about whether we do or don’t hand Liverpool the PL trophy. We need to focus on how can we as individuals and as a global society work to gather and contribute something for the good of everyone during this pandemic.

The world is currently in big trouble. None of us have ever seen anything quite like this before in our lifetimes. You probably have to go back to World War II to see this kind of worldwide chaos. Governments and health care officials are working tirelessly to find solutions to meet demands as fast as they can. Doctors and nurses, and everyone on the frontlines of this virus are working 24/7 to fight an uphill battle.

Yes, we love our football, and yes, we are concerned about the future of the game, both short term and long. But, football is only a small part of the big picture. If the season is cancelled and someone gets the shaft, so be it. We are sorry. Our one and only concern should be to get our citizens healthy once again.

Hopefully, by August, football can return in all of its glory and pageantry! What a day that will be when the game can start again, with only its sights set on the future, not the past!

Stay healthy, and stay indoors!
