Arsenal advance in Carabao Cup following penalty shoot-out!

Mikel Arteta went to Anfield on Thursday to win the game, and he did just that.
After a tough defeat at Liverpool on Monday, the Gunners held the Reds to a 0-0 draw following 90 minutes of regulation play. Bernd Leno erased two Liverpool penalty kicks, and then Joe Willock nailed the game winner for Arsenal in the penalty shoot-out.

So, what does this mean going forward for the Gunners?
Well, it means they have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup to face Manchester City at home in late December. It also means the Gunners have now walked away with 3 wins in the last 4 matches against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad.

This is also Arsenal’s second penalty shoot-out win against Liverpool just this season. The first one in the Community Shield, and now today’s.

Mikel Arteta told Arsenal.com this is his post-match press conference, “To come to this stadium and beat them, it’s a great feeling. I am extremely proud of the players, the performance they put in individually and how the competed in the game, and collectively as well when some of them haven’t played many minutes… the way they handled certain situations and helped each other on the pitch.”

Today was also a confidence builder for Bernd Leno who secured the #1 keeper job when the season started. After watching Emiliano Martinez finish last season in excellent form, and facing criticism going into this season, today Leno erased all doubt and showed his class, especially in the penalty shoot-out.

All is good in north London tonight, and the momentum and confidence should be back with the squad as they prepare for Sheffield United on Sunday.

Congrats to the Gunners for a big win at Anfield!
