Back to the Future?

Was what we witnessed today a glimpse into the future of this football team? I was so excited to watch this game because I hoped Unai Emery would showcase his treasure chest of young talent…and he didn’t let me down.

Let’s get down to our main talking point, the youngsters. 4 of the 5 goals were scored by the young and the restless under the age of 21. Two by Gabriel Martinelli, and one each by Joseph Willock and Reiss Nelson. The oldest man in the scoring group tonight was Rob Holding at a ripe age of 24.

Here is a list of tonight’s Arsenal players who are under 25…

Tierney 22, Chambers 24, Torreira 23, Smith-Rowe 19, Bellerin 24, Saka 18, Martinelli 18, Willock 20, Holding 24, Nelson 19

So, what does this mean? Well, to say the least it looks like we are locked and loaded with talent for a long time to come. If we can keep them in red and white, and develop them as a unit the future looks bright for the Emirates fateful. The way they played today’s game was a pleasure to watch. For the first time in a long time it looked like Arsenal players were actually having fun on the pitch.

Let’s single out a few of the youngsters. First, Martinelli was terrific. Not only was he scoring goals he was also making runs plus getting into position for crosses and rebounds. At 18 years old his future is so promising. If he gets game time and approaches the game with the great attitude and talent he displayed today I think he could become a real star in European football.

Second, Joe Willock. He had a remarkable preseason but has struggled finding consistent playing time in the Premiere League. He has a nose for goal, and a desire to win the ball. Again, another diamond in the rough that will shine in Arsenal colors for years to come.

Maybe one of the most impressive performances of the game belonged to newcomer Keiran Tierney. This guy was everything that was advertised! He was up and down the left flank all day long, winning loose balls, making runs, adding crosses and playing his heart out. Without a doubt he impressed everyone who watched. Let’s get him involved on Monday night at Old Trafford.

Of course there was the comeback performances of Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin. How great was it to see Rob play the entire 90 minutes, plus find the back of the net too! Storybook stuff Rob!

Plus, one of my all time favorite Gunners has always been Hector Bellerin. Now that the off beat fashion guru is styling back on the pitch I have greater confidence going forward this season. Both Rob and Hector should be in there starting XI on Monday night.

The one guy who also needs a pat on the back is Mesut Ozil. He led the charge as captain and his performance was both smooth and professional. He seemed relaxed and confident, and his passing was spot on throughout his time on the pitch. It is so hard to get your head wrapped around Mesut Ozil because you never know who will show up…the brilliant Ozil or the overpaid Ozil. He wasn’t brilliant today but his senior leadership was an obvious bright spot for the Gunners.

Now it’s up to the manager to find the right mixture of players to form his perfect XI. This group has the skill set, the talent, and as we saw on Sunday they can display grit and spine. Emery needs to be smart and field a team that will get 3 points against Man United.
