Bukayo Saka was not in England’s starting XI on Sunday v Italy in the Euro 2020 final, yet Arsenal’s young star came on and played an important role in the match’s outcome. Unfortunately, it was not the magical moment all of England had hoped for.
Piers Morgan said it best in his Twitter post following the match, “I admire every player who steps up and shows the balls to take a penalty kick in a game that important. Especially where they are 19, 21 and 23. Proud of you. You missed and we lost, but you’ve all got guts.”
As the penalty kick scenario got to the point where England had to take its 5th kick, I was hoping and praying it wasn’t going to be Saka. However, the young man stepped up and gave it his best shot. Unfortunately, Italy’s world class GK Donnarumma guessed correctly, and made the save. Game, set, match.
My question, and that of millions around the globe, is this. Why was Saka taking this kick? For the life of me I can’t remember him ever taking a penalty kick for Arsenal. If so, there haven’t been many. So, with a 19-year-old player put in that position, and with veterans like Sterling, Phillips and Grealish standing in the wings, what was England man ager Gareth Southgate thinking for heaven’s sake?
Southgates taken blame for the misfires, and said in his post-match presser the three players who missed the PKs are not to be blamed. “That’s my decision to give him (Saka) that penalty, that’s my responsibility. It’s not him or Marcus or Jadon, we work together, we work through them in training. That’s the order we came to.”
At the end of the day, however or by whomever the decision was made, England lost the match and the Euro 2020 trophy. However, the future still looks bright for England, but right now I am most concerned about Bukayo Saka, and his immediate future. How will he react going forward? How long with this miss hang over his head?

Young man, all of England’s fans, and Arsenal supporters, are proud of the effort you put in during the Euro 2020 tournament. You represented you country, your club, your family and your fans with great courage, dignity and strength. You will overcome this one moment in time to go on and do wonderful, amazing things on the football pitch for club and for country. Also, ignore all of the ignorance and hate on social media. Those people are disgusting human beings who could never rise to your level of respect and humanity. Now, get some rest, and we will see you in August!
