Following the weekend, the Gunners trail league-leading Liverpool by 11 points. Unless there is a major collapse with the Reds, and unless Arsenal can start winning games consecutively, then the title race is over. The Gunners will now then face a fight for a third consecutive 2nd place finish in the Premier League.

Last Saturday’s performance by Arsenal was less than spectacular. In fact, it was dreadful. The Gunners controlled the ball 68% of the game, had 20 shots attempts, but only 2 were on target, and zero found the back of the net against 16th place West Ham United.

So now, Arsenal are scoreless in two of the their last three Premier League matches. Two of those matches (Newcastle United and West Ham United) saw Arsenal face a five-man defensive back line. In either match was Mikel Arteta’s side wasn’t able to provide any real, consistent penetration into the opponent’s box. With the Gunners offense featuring a get wide, then to the baseline and cross into the box tactical approach, the five-man back line defenses suffocated Arsenal’s creativity and ultimately provided breakaway scoring counter-attacks for the opposition.

On Saturday, the team looked tired as well. Arteta needs Saka, Martinelli, Havertz and Jesus more now then ever. Yes, Mikel Merino looked like a potential striker v Leicester City, however, we really can’t expect him to ultimately carry the scoring load. Merino could possibly develop into a good #9, but for now he needs time and repetition to gain confidence in his new role.

Not only that, Rice, Trossard, Timber and Partey have become shadow players in recent weeks. Yes, their performances are slipping below what this club currently needs. Maybe, the boss needs to really shake-up his line-up v Forest.

Going forward, nothing gets any easier before the next international break. During that stretch, The Gunners will face  Nottingham Forest, PSV Eindhoven (twice) and Chelsea. Plus, throw Manchester United into on the pile as well.
