Come on America…join the soccer revolution!

When I was a kid growing up in America’s heartland soccer was only a game we played in gym class. Little did I know then soccer would eventually become a big part of my adult life. For many, if not most of my American friends, soccer was just an activity their kids play(ed), or something to attach their patriotism to during World Cups. They watched because it’s what everyone was discussing around the office water cooler. But once the cup was raised and the medals were passed out the TV sets switch back to their sport of choice.

For many years I thought this might still be the case, not just with many of my friends, but with the entire country.

However, the times they are a changing! Here are some stats to illustrate how my old theory no longer carries any weight.

Soccer is now the 5th most watch professional sport on US TV.

1 million US high school athletes (boys and girls) participate in team soccer programs at their schools.

4.2 million young boys and girls are officially registered in youth soccer programs across the USA. This is #2 behind baseball.

1,400 US colleges universities and junior colleges field men’s soccer teams.

1,500 US colleges, universities and junior colleges field women’s soccer teams.

Soccer is the 4th highest participation sport in the US.

There are over 70 Arsenal supporters clubs in this country. Many, many more represent a variety of teams from around the world.

I’ve often said soccer is an acquired taste. It takes time to understand the game, to learn the teams and leagues, and to become attached to certain players. For me, the turning point was when I visited London and saw a game at the Emirates, then a second game at Craven Cottage. Those two experiences brought it home. I was hooked, big time! To attend a soccer match in Europe is like no American sports experience. I’ve been to Super Bowls, NBA Finals, and the College Football Championship game…but nothing has been as exciting or as exhilarating as being at a live soccer match in a stadium full of diehard supporters.

Now I know it’s not possible for everyone to travel to Europe for a soccer game, however, the MLS is also providing some great fan experiences. The league is up and coming and filled with many of the world’s best footballers. And if that doesn’t float your boat, wait until summer when many of the top European clubs come to America for preseason tours. Many of these clubs participate in the International Champions Cup. Those games provide great fan experiences as well.

Bottomline, the great thing about soccer is how supporters come together wherever they are to celebrate the clubs they love. Whether it’s in front of a TV at someone’s home, or at a sports bars, or even in a stadium, it’s the experience that becomes the adrenaline rush football fans thrive for every weekend.

I think this is why soccer in the States is growing at a quick pace. Also, let’s not forgot the impact our great women’s national team has had on the sport’s popularity as well! Their victories in the World Cup have helped to inspire generations, both young and old, to experience the beautiful game and to learn to appreciate 90 minutes of non-stop action, with no times outs.

Come on America! For those of you on board I say best of luck to your team of choice this season. And for those of you on the outside looking in, grab a pint, find a stool and enjoy the soccer experience. You’ll be glad you did.
