Here is an updated timeline on the negotiations and discussions being held to get the Premier League up and running again…
Yesterday (Sunday) – UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it’s time to get sports rolling again on June 1st.
Today (Monday) – The Premier League shareholders met again and worked on finding solutions for the key issues of player safety and match venues.
During today’s meeting, the league’s clubs said “no way” to playing games in neutral venues. Now, the government needs to be persuaded. There will be more meetings this Tuesday and Thursday.
Tuesday – The team captains, players and PFA reps will have their say.
Wednesday – The PL’s managers will meet to be briefed on where things stand, or don’t stand.
Thursday – There will be a general meeting among the decision-making officials from the English football world and the English government. This meeting “could” produce an official decision.
On the other hand, I have heard that a final decision might not come until next Monday, May 18th.
Unfortunately, from everything I have heard and/or read, the neutral venue issue could be the ultimate sticking point. Premier League chief executive Richard Master said, “There is still momentum to try and play out the remaining 92 games, but there have been so many rows and disagreements over neutral venues that it might not happen.”
If an impasse remains, the PL will then have to work out a plan to end the season. One idea is a weighted points per game formula to determine a final table, a PL champion, European qualifiers and relegation.
There is still a lot to decide, and the clock is still ticking..tick..tick..tick…
