Oh my, humble pie! Surely, Sunderland’s Lee Johnson has to eat his words following Tuesday’s 5-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal match at Emirates Stadium. Johnson, who previously stated he wanted to play Arsenal before meeting any of the “big boys,” returned to Sunderland with his tail between his legs. That is karma, baby!
Anyway, enough about him. What a night, and what a performance from Eddie Nketiah, and how about that goal from Arsenal debutante Charlie Patino? In one word – AWESOME!
As predicted, Mikel Arteta rotated his squad for this match, and boy the squad did not disappoint. Minus, the one goal for the Black Cats, the match was controlled by Arsenal.
However, there was a touch of irony in this match as well. Eddie Nketiah, who Arsenal wants to keep, dazzled the Arsenal faithful at the Emirates with a few flicks and tricks resulting in a three goal masterpiece. Nketiah has now scored 8 goals in 7 Carabao Cup appearances for the Gunners. However, as of today, Eddie has refused to sign a new contract with the Gunners because he wants more playing time, and playing time at Arsenal is hard to come by at the moment. So, with that said, I’m sure the England international probably increased his PR and his market value following Tuesday’s three-banger.
Arteta told Arsenal.com in his post-match press conference, “We are trying really hard to do the best that we can. Obviously, the contract has an expiry date and you cannot control that and we have had discussions with Eddie for a long time. I repeat again that his genuine intention is that he wants to play football and that’s the thing that is driving whatever decision he’s going to take for his future and you have to respect that. Obviously, he’s a player that we admire and that we want to keep, that has come through the system and we will continue to do our best to keep him because we want him to be part of our project and the club.”
As for 18-year-old Charlie Patino, it was a storybook debut. Coming on late in the match to get some first team experience, the youngster found the back of the net following a perfect Nicolas Pepe assist. Wearing #87, Patino delighted the crowd and put a cherry on top of a great night in north London!
There were other solid performances as well by the Gunners. Pepe was providing crosses, one after the other. Bernd Leno was solid in goal. Nuno Tavares ran his socks off as usual. Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard both contributed excellent shifts, as did Cedric Soares and Mo Elneny.
All-in-all, it was a terrific match for Arsenal, who now wait to see who they will play in the two-leg semifinal coming up in January.
Next up, Norwich City on Sunday!
COYG!
