As opening day for the 2020-2021 Premier League draws closer, the chances of having some supporters back in the grounds beginning in October has hit a major hurdle.
With COVID-19 numbers on the rise in England, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told his countrymen today that he will “review” plans to return audiences to stadiums from that date (October 1).
The initial plan, before today’s announcement, was to allow each club to allow a maximum of 25% of their stadiums’ capacities to be filled on matchday beginning in October. But today, Johnson put those plans on hold after government scientists agreed the spread of the coronavirus is currently too high for supporters to return to stadiums across England.
Johnson said, “We must revise plans to pilot larger audiences in stadiums and review our intention to return audiences to stadiums from the 1st October. That doesn’t mean we’re going to scrap the program entirely, it just means we are going to review and abridge it.”
So, back to the drawing board for the government, the clubs and their supporters. Obviously, this will add to the financial blows the English clubs have taken during the pandemic, as the government attempts to find a balance between safety and economics.
Here in the US, the NFL opens their season this coming weekend. The league has approved small crowds for each stadium. College football is also allowing some spectators, however, NASCAR, PGA, MLS, WNBA, NHL, NBA and MLB are still holding their games behind closed doors.
This is such a difficult time for so many people affiliated with the sporting world. My heart goes out to the people who work behind the scenes, as security guards, tickets takers, ushers, ball boys, vendors, parking attendants, and so many more.
As a supporter and a fan, I miss going to games in person, however, I feel so much safer at home in front of the TV. With that said, this pandemic has had such a negative impact on the entire world, in so many ways. It’s so unfortunate that so many people have to make the difficult decision of health and safety v jobs and money.
I hope our governments are making the right calls, and doing the right things for their citizens. I’m no expert, but maybe things should just continue on the current path until the numbers decline, and hopefully, a vaccine is produced and distributed.
Can that day be soon?
