Arsenal’s effort on Saturday was a mixed bag. The team opened each half looking strong and aggressive, however, Brighton and Hove showed how they could be a factor in the Premier League this season by making it difficult for the Gunners to penetrate a tight defensive effort at the Seagulls end of the pitch.
The final was 1-1, but referee Chris Kavanaugh had a little something to say about the match’s outcome when he pulled a red card on Declan Rice early in the second half. Rice kicked a ball away after a foul was called and was sent off. It was Rice’s second yellow card of the match. On the other hand, a Brighton player kicked a ball away earlier in the game but wasn’t even given a warning. Obviously, Mikel Arteta and the club felt this inconsistency in following the rules of the game had a definite impact on the final score by leaving the Gunners a man down for over 30 minutes.
At the end of the day, Arsenal walked away with one point with two weeks to prepare for Tottenham Hotspur following the international break. Rice will be unavailable to play due to the red card, but this will give someone a chance to step in and fill the gap in the North London Derby. With Rice out, it will be interesting to see how Arteta builds his game plan v Hotspur.
Sure, Saturday was disappointing, however, we need to be proud of the boys for the way they stayed in the game a man down. The 10-man squad even put together several opportunities to score but couldn’t finish the job.
All-in-all, I believe this is even a better squad than last season. There is no denying the Gunners will have a very solid season and will be competitive on all fronts, including the newly-formatted Champions League, but of course there will be a few days like Saturday along the way.
