It’s only preseason, however, the Gunners already look like they’re ready to provide some fireworks this season as they humiliated the MLS All-Stars, 5-0, in Washington, DC on Wednesday night.
Goals by Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard, Jorginho, Gabriel Martinelli and new boy Kai Havertz will surely give Mikel Arteta a sense of accomplishment as the Gunners’ USA tour now moves to New York City.
What’s most important about this win was that it came against the best the MLS has to offer this season. Of course, Wayne Rooney’s side had limited time to work together as a unit, but nonetheless, the Gunners were fluid, entertaining and showed they are taking the rights steps to prepare for the grueling season ahead.
As footnotes: Bukayo Saka was named the Man of the Match, while Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber came off the bench to make their Arsenal debuts, while newcomer Kai Havertz’s late goal sealed the deal.
MLS manager Wayne Rooney complimented the Gunners following his team’s defeat, “The result is what it is. Arsenal showed their quality. I thought the All-Star lads looked a bit nervous and hesitant, especially in the first half. I really like the new players Arsenal has signed. They’ve signed players with experience, which is important, and they have a really good coach in Mikel Arteta.”
Arteta surprised a few of us with his starting XI that included: Ramsdale, Gabriel, Saliba, Kiwior, White, Jorginho, Trossard, Vieira, Jesus, Nketiah and Saka.
However, by the end of the game every player on the Arsenal bench saw action, expect for Rob Holding, Runar Runarsson and Amario Cozier-Duberry.
Now it’s on to the Big Apple to face Manchester United on Saturday.
