Eddie Nketiah has failed to make Mikel Arteta’s starting XI since December 31st v Fulham. Even during Gabriel Jesus’s injury, the England striker has not seen the start of a match from the pitch this calendar year.
So, is Nketiah in Arteta’s doghouse?
Nketiah joined the Gunners in 2017. He has made a total of 111 appearances and scored 19 goalsvfor Arsenal, including a hat-trick on October 28th v Sheffield United.
At 24 years-old, #14 apparently has not generated the number of goals the manager is looking for. Nketiah has has numerous chances that didn’t find the back of the net.
During January, I was of the belief Nketiah wasn’t playing to avoid injury in case Arsenal decided to sell him elsewhere. But, that obviously wasn’t the case, so Eddie is still riding the pine, seeing only clean-up duty late in matches. Nketiah has scored 5 goals in 30 appearances this season.
For me, the biggest surprise is that in the five matches since his last start, Kai Havertz has played the striker position in three of those matches. Of course, Havertz played there for both Germany and Chelsea, however, Nketiah has consistently been the back-up to Jesus. Apparently, for some reason, he is no longer.
So what gives at Arsenal? Is Arteta disappointed with Nketyiah’s lack of scoring, or his training habits, or is it a personality issue?
There has not been a lot reported on the subject so we are all just left wondering.
Personally, I think Eddie is an above-average striker who always appears to give his all for his teammates.
