As the 2019-2020 Premier League season draws to a close, questions surrounding Arsenal’s ability to sign “big” players in the upcoming transfer market abound.
For literally months names of potential players transferring to or from Arsenal have been swarming around north London like bees around honey. And, of course, the biggest name of all belongs to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Will he stay, or will he go? Will the answer to that question will help unlock the Gunners’ summer transfer strategy?
Other comments and concerns were tossed Arsenal’s way this week when club legend Tony Adams accused there Gunners’ head of football Raul Sanllehi and technical director Edu of being ‘out of their depth’.
While appearing on a TalkSport radio program, Adams said, “I think the club is going through such a recruitment issue at the moment, it’s not relying on agents. That’s not the way to go, it’s not Arsenal DNA I’m afraid. I don’t like it. I’ve got to say it publicly. Edu, I love him, he’s a beautiful man, it’s not personal, but he has no experience of building European squads. Even Raul Sanllehi came from Barcelona, all the money in the world, it doesn’t look like he’s going to get money. Those people are out of their depth, I’m sorry.”
So far this summer, Edu and Sanllehi have signed Pablo Mari, Bukayo Saka, Cedric Soares, Dinos Mavropanos and David Luiz. They have reportedly been chasing such names as Thomas Partey, Philippe Countiho, Dayot Upamecano and Antoinee Griezmann, however, without a 4th straight year of Champions League football, or even no Europa League football, our once shiny image, and the lack of a deep war chest will hurt Arteta’s chances of not getting the players he wants, and needs.
Following Adams’ harsh comments about the Arsenal’s leading executives, Mikel Arteta told the Mirror,”I have full faith. I have a really good relationship with Edu, with Raul, and with managing director Vinai Venkatesham, and I am in direct contact with the owners. We know what we want to do. That’s not an issue. Everybody has the same ambition. We are all in this together. But if you ask me right now what I have and how can I do it? I’m sorry, I don’t know. There are a lot of questions that we cannot resolve right now with the situation that we have financially. The other thing is that we don’t know whether we will be in Europe and we have players with whom we don’t know what is going to happen. That’s the reality.”
“They (the ownership) have been very, very supportive from the first day I joined the club, they were very much participating in the decision to bring me back here. And it’s the same with Raul, Vinai and with Edu. There is no gap or friction or anything there.”
Earlier this year, during the shutdown, owner Stan Kroenke stepped in to provide a loan to the club which would help offset financial losses during the COVID-19 shutdown. However, there has been no word from the ownership regarding additional funding in the upcoming transfer market.
I have faith Mikel Arteta can make this club more competitive. In fact, he already has. However, the manager can only take it so far without help from his ownership. The squad needs to rebuild in certain areas in order to be competitive in the Premier League. Just look around, Leicester City, Wolves, Sheffield United and Burnley have all greatly improved, while Manchester United and Chelsea have grown even stronger. The only saving grace is that Tottenham Hotspur are still struggling as well for European football.
The gap between the end of this season, and the start of the next will be a very important time for the Arsenal brass. Between now and then the Arsenal leadership needs to come to a decision. Are we seriously getting back into the race for titles, or are we just okay with being in the middle of the pack?
I don’t know if Tony Adams is right or wrong, however I do know we have a young and talented manager who will do great things for this club, however, he needs funds and resources to help him accomplish his goals.
It’s time to “Mind the Gap.” The gap between this season and the next season will be so critical to the future of this club.
