TV commentator Piers Morgan has frequently shown his dislike of Mikel Arteta as the Arsenal manager. He has continually mocked Arteta’s “process” and banged his drum hard on the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Over the weekend, Morgan posted this on Twitter, “Watching this exhilarating match (Man City v Liverpool) with a heavy heart as I realize not a single Arsenal player would get into either of these teams. Arteta’s much-vaunted “process” hasn’t made us any more competitive with the best clubs.”
Then former Arsenal star and now NBC Sports pundit Lee Dixon exchanged blows with Morgan on Twitter over the departure of Aubameyang…
Morgan, “Aubameyang scores again for Barcelona. His 10th goal in 14 games since Arsenal gave him away for free. Now, officially one of the worst decisions in managerial history.”
Dixon,”Piers. Really. You are making yourself look rather silly. Enough. Get over it. He was disruptive. Club always bigger. You know that.”
Morgan, “I don’t agree. We lost a world-class striker because our manager mismanaged him. Quite clear from his form at Barca, where Xavi loves him, that he’s still a magnificant player. And we’re left with Lacazette who hasn’t scored this year. Terrible decision that will cost us Top 4.”
Dixon, “Some players fit, some don’t. Opinions is where it’s at. Our coach decided he didn’t fit. We all have our favs. He quite clearly is yours. Banging the Auba drum suits who? You and your agenda which is fine. But doesn’t help anyone but you. I would say ease off and support.”
Okay, this was an interesting exchange of opposite opinions, and from my point of view, I would have to say both men make good points.
Yes, Aubameyang has been on fire since joining Barcelona, however, he was floundering this season with Arsenal. Was it his fault, or the manager’s? Who really knows. Yes, giving Aubameyang away on a free transfer was not great business, however, I also see why Arteta let him go. The situation was creating too much clubhouse drama.
Unfortunately, finding a goals from the Arsenal team continues to be very scarce. In fact, since January 1st, the Gunners have found the back of the net only 13 times, while Auba has scored 10 for the Spanish giants.
Regarding the process, I would have to say it is a “work in progress.” At times the Gunners seem to be moving forward, then, they hit reverse switch and things go drastically backwards.
Plus, after watching the Manchester City v Liverpool match on Sunday, it is so apparent our club is miles away from being able to compete at that level. And now with a pile of injuries to contend with, the run-in gets even tougher.
However, as Lee Dixon said, “Ease off and support.”
That’s what I will continue to do, and I hope Gooner Nation follows suit!
