Even after two impressive wins, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is not one to let it go to his head. In Thursday’s presser he said, “It’s great to win and perform the way we are performing at the moment, but it’s just two games, we have a whole season ahead of us. Let’s focus on the next match and what we have to do and the areas where we can improve. It’s just two games. It’s nothing, the whole season is still to play for. We know that, we are very conscious of that and we are very conscious of the improvements we still need to make as a team to close games better, to play better and this has been our whole aim all week.”
Arteta is a realist, and claims he doesn’t even look at the Premier League table until at least weeks 10 or 12 into the season. Even Arserne Wenger said it wasn’t until December that watching the table made any sense.
Yes, there are a lot of matches to be played, and this season the Gunners add the rigorous Europa League tournament to their fixture list. This is where Arteta needs reinforcements, players he can put on the pitch and count on.
Right now his second team line-up looks something like this…
Turner, Tierney, Holding, Tomiyasu, Soares, Elneny, Lokonga, Vieira, Nketiah and Pepe
With Pepe and several other players on the bubble to possibly be moved on, Edu Gaspar and Arteta need to find additional back-ups in the remaining 12 days of this transfer window. The Arsenal squad cannot become depleted like it was at the end of last season.
So, Arteta has the right mindset. Let’s not get overly excited about the 2-0 start. There is a tough match to play on Saturday at Bournemouth. The Cherries manager Scott Parker has put together a strong squad that earned its way back into the Premier League this season. After two matches, Bournemouth is 11th in the league table with 1 win and 1 loss. Vitality Stadium is a tough place to play, and Mikel Artea knows that first hand
“It will be a really tough match. I’ve been there many, many times, I know how tough it is, and I know to expect the atmosphere to be hectic. It’s a team that is used to winning because last year they had a really successful season, and they’ve started well this season. I know Scott Parker very, very well and I know they’re going to make it a really difficult game for us.”
A 3-0 start for the Gunners would be terrific. Obviously, building momentum early in the campaign would ignite Gooner Nation into a frenzy. However, for now we need to take a deep breath and enjoy the journey. It should be an exciting one.
