Following yesterday’s Carabao Cup clash in Leicester, there can be no doubt that Mesut Ozil has probably played his last game with the Gunners. Currently, the German midfielder is training with a mix of first teamers and under-23’s. If you watch the training videos on Arsenal.com, you might catch a glimpse of him in the background at London Colney.
It’s obvious Mikel Arteta has no plans for Ozil this season, other than to watch him ride out his contract until the end of June, 2021. His weekly wage of $447,000 (USD) per week is too daunting for most clubs to swallow, plus at the age of 31, he’s not getting any younger…but he is well rested. Ozil has not seen the pitch once since before the coronavirus pandemic shut down football.
Arteta is very coy when discussing Ozil. During his post-match briefing yesterday, the manager was asked numerous question about Ozil. Here are his responses…
What does Ozil need to do to get back on the pitch? “I’m really happy with the performance here, how difficult they’re making things for the coaching staff to select the squad.”
Why has Ozil fallen out of favor? “The team is evolving, you can see the level they are achieving. This is where we are at the moment. We want to evolve more and play better and compete better. We need to keep maintaining that.”
Do you believe others are more suited to play? “We are picking the players that we believe are the best for each game. You can see we keep training, it’s what we’re trying to do.”
Has the side indeed evolved beyond him? “You can see that the players we are changing, we are using, it’s very difficult every week not for Mesut but for some other players as well to make the squad. Every week we try to pick the right players.”
If Ozil wasn’t involved in this game, will we see him being involved again? “It’s difficult for others as well that aren’t involved in the Premier League and didn’t play tonight either. We have a squad of 26, 27 players at the moment and we can’t give playing time to all of them.”
The boss understood why he was being bombarded with so many Ozil questions by responding, “Of course, I understand and I respect your questions but I have to try to do my job as fair as possible. I try to select the players that are, in my opinion, in better condition.”
Let me just say this, if Mikel Arteta ever gets tired of coaching, he needs to try politics. The man can talk his way in and around anything and still say nothing.
Yes, this is a very delicate subject at AFC. Ozil has had his ups and downs with the club, however, at his peak there was no one better…no one.
Is he done and dusted at Arsenal? It would appear so, however, in my humble opinion, I still think there is a lot of football left in the playmaker. Yes, he is not the type of player Arteta wants on his squad. Ozil lacks the defensive drive and fails to work hard to regain possession, BUT, the current squad needs creativity in the middle of the pitch. Ceballos, Willock and Saka has shown some flare, but at the end of the day, Mesut Ozil is still a magician with the ball.
Now, some may say he doesn’t project the right example for the younger players. I get that, but in order to win a lot of games this season we will need a lot of goals. The front line is awesome, our defensive has greatly improved, but the midfield needs a playmaker, a point guard to set-up the shots for Auba and company.
His pride and confidence must be at a low point in his career.
He has been a good soldier for Arsenal. I hate to see him just fade away.

You said and I quote “In order to win a lot of games this season we will need a lot of goals” When Mikel Arteta took over in his initial stage, Ozil was featured virtually in every match played, could you please tell me how many chances Ozil created that leads to goals? How many lot of games did we won in Wenger and Emery’s regime when Ozil was given a lot chances to prove himself? Ozil is finished, and Arteta is not here to play players just because they are in a pitiable situation when they are not hardworking. That will be so detrimental to the club if Arteta does that.
How could you say Ozil is finished?despite missing so many games last season,he still created the most chances…so what exactly are u talking about?Ozil being frozen out has nothing to do with his ability for sure…still the best in his position at Arsenal.
from my own point of view, Ozil should be used during arsenal match against Liverpool on Monday because he has all what it takes to inject that tactical spirit in the boys that will guarantee us victory against Liverpool trust me Ozil is still a gem in d pitch no doubt about it.
