“I like players that have zero ego, that play for the team, and want to contribute whether it’s one minute or 96 minutes, or just by being there and contributing to our culture.” Those are words from Mikel Arteta on Mohamed Elneny.
After three seasons with the Gunners, the 28-year-old Egyptian went out on loan to Besiktas in Turkey last season. I, for one, thought we had seen the last of him in an Arsenal shirt. But, low and behold, when the new season began in September, there he was back on the first team at Arsenal, raring and ready to go. And boy, has he taken full advantage of his fresh start under Mikel Arteta.
During his first stint at Arsenal, 2016-2019, Mo played in 89 matches for the Gunners. Since his return to north London this season, he has made 9 total appearances, including 4 Premier League starts.
His best game was on Sunday at Old Trafford. While linking up with newcomer Thomas Partey, Elneny’s motor was turning in high gear the entire match. He and Thomas dominated the midfield to a point where Man of the Match pundit Garth Crooks had this to say about the duo, “Partey, along with Mohamed Elneny, dominated Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay. I’ve not seen an Arsenal midfield duo dominate the centre of the park at Old Trafford so effectively since Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit.”
That’s a huge compliment for Partey and Elneny, but especially for Elneny who seemed to have landed on the Arsenal scrap pile, only to return from the ashes like Phoenix to ignite a whole new career.
These are the stories we like to hear and read about. Right? The forgotten player who is sent away and then returns home to make significant contributions to his team.
Will Partey and Elneny continue to become a successful duo in the Arsenal midfield? Has Arteta found the midfield combo he was looking for?
Only time will tell, however, one of these players needs to step up and provide more offensive creativity as well. They are proven defenders, however, at the end of the day, Arsenal needs more goals.
For me, I am thrilled to see Mohamed Elneny in an Arsenal shirt once again. I hope he will continue to grow and flourish under Arteta’s leadership, while also helping the Gunners have a remarkable season!
