With that said, here are a few odds and ends on this September Monday…
One of the biggest surprises for me on Saturday was not seeing William Saliba on the pitch, at all.
I really thought Saliba would start long before Mikel Areta had Gabriel ready to start in the Premier League. However, Saliba didn’t even make the bench.
Once again, we can only predict or hope what might happen while having absolutely no idea what is going on in the manager’s head, or behind closed doors.
Now, we have some clarity from the boss on the Saliba saga.
He said, “I think it’s going to take him [Saliba] some time to adapt to our way of playing but as well to get adapted to the language, the rhythm, the physicality of the country. As well we have to bear in mind that he didn’t play much football last season with all the injuries he had. So, I think it will be a process that we have to be patient, picking the right games with the right environment and trying to grow because he [Saliba] has a really good potential.”
One could assume Sailba will be in the back line v Leicester City in the Carabao Cup match on September 22nd.
Here’s an interesting thought that I read over the weekend. Is the recent resurgence of Mo Elneny just a wake up call for some of Arsenal’s other midfielders? Is Mo being used to set an example for what can happen if you work hard? Without a doubt, Elneny played his heart out in both the Community Shield and in the game v Fulham, however, there are players with more talent than the Egyptian who saw either limited action, or no action at all. Such as…Ceballos played late in the game, Willock and Saka remained on the bench, while Ozil Guendouzi and Torreira remain in limbo.
Remember, Arteta publicly said every player coming into his preseason camp would start on a level playing field. The past didn’t matter, only what they did from that point forward. Obviously, Elneny was paying attention. Now, we know Ceballos was just re-signed, however, the Spanish midfield did return to north London as fit as a fiddle.
Was it hard to watch Tottenham loose their season opener v Everton? Well, NOT REALLY!
Here’s a great quote from Arteta on Willian, “We need a mix. We have a lot of young players with big talent and big futures, but they need some role models. And, I think Willy is a really good one to have around the place because he doesn’t talk much in the dressing room, but he always talks on the pitch.”
Alexandre Lacazette on the this season, “We have a lot of big ambition. We know Auba is going to score a lot of goals this season. I want to help the team to be on top, I know it’s my job. It’s not for me to just play and do the link-ups so I will try and do my best this season.” This doesn’t sound like a guy who wants to leave Arsenal, does it?
And finally…I hope the Gunners aren’t making a huge mistake with this move, however, an announcement from Aston Villa that goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is leaving the Gunners is imminent. The Argentinian has apparantly passed his medical at Villa and is getting ready to sign a 4-year deal with that club. Martinez stepped in to help lead AFC to the FA Cup title last season. His play over the final 11 matches of the season was excellent. He waited a longtime for his opportunity to come, and when it did, it took advantage of it – big time! Let’s hope this isn’t one of thosee deals we look back on and regret in the future. We wish Emi all the best, and we’ll see him back at the Emirates on November 11th!
