Is Aaron Ramsdale in jeopardy of losing his #1 goalkeeper spot with the Gunners?
Here are the latest revelations from across the pond as Edu and Arteta continue to find ways to improve the Gunners for the coming season.
First, the Gunners #2 goalkeeper Matt Turner is on Nottingham Forest’s transfer radar. If that would go through what an interesting opening league game on August 12th when Forest comes to north London. Turner v his former teammates? That would be fun.
Second, Arsenal is exploring a potential deal with Brentford for goalkeeper David Raya. The 27-year-old has turned down a move to Bayern Munich in favor of the Gunners.
Now, if you take a comparative look at Ramsdale v Raya’s 2022/2023 stats in the Premier League, Raya has a distinctive edge. He had more saves, a higher percentage of saves, plus a much higher performance rating, 77 v 53.
So, if this deal goes actually goes through, Ramsdale’s starting position could be seriously challenged by the experienced Raya. Ultimately, this is a good thing for both players, and the entire team.
Fabrizio Romano reports, “It’s not a case of replacing the England keeper, but if it goes through it promises to be a n intriguing battle for the number one spot in Mikel Arteta’s side. The Arsenal boss is a big fan of Raya.”
Competition brings out the best in a player. Maybe Arteta thinks Ramsdale has become too complacent as the Gunners #1?
As far as Turner goes, barring an injury to Ramsdale, he will never be #1 at Arsenal. The USA keeper is a terrific player and deserves to play every day. Maybe a chance at Nottingham Forest would give him that opportunity.
The transfer saga continues…
Cheers.
