Should the Carabao Cup be rebooted, or just booted?

To date, the Premier League has twenty matches that need to be rescheduled for one reason or the other, including four for Arsenal.

For clubs still in multiple competitions, like Chelsea (Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Club World Cup), their upcoming fixture log jam will be a nightmare for Thomas Tuchel and his team to maneuver. The Blues also have two Premier League matches to reschedule. Now I’m not feeling sorry for Chelsea, however, it is a good example of how a fixture overload can impact the players. I feel sorry for any player who has to be put in a situation where there are just too many demands put on their bodies. Yes, these men are paid a lot of money to play a game, however, we must remember they are just people who can get hurt, no matter how fit they seem.

Arsenal could be considered one of the lucky clubs right now, since the Gunners have only a maximum of two cup games, along with the remainder of their Premier League schedule to play. Even so, the Gunners could potentially have four more weeks with multiple matches scheduled before the end of the season in late May.

Recently, there has been a lot of debate and challenges among some of the Prem’s top managers asking for the FA to cut back on the number of games clubs are required to play in a season.

One solution seems to be the elimination of the Carabao Cup. As an American looking in, I have often wondered what is the appeal of this tournament? From what I have seen over the years, the Carabao Cup (or however it has been branded), has been diminished by most managers by giving youth players a chance to shine on a bigger stage. Even Arsenal Wenger barely gave this competition any respect. With the FA Cup providing such a traditional value to the English game, to me, the Carabao Cup is just a weak sister. Case in point, does any club in the top tier ever hold a parade for winning the Carabao Cup? Please let me know if I am wrong.

Maybe, this competition needs to be rebooted and re-established for only clubs in the second, third and fourth divisions of English football? This would at least be a start to help scale back on the heavy list of fixture Premier League players currently face. Or maybe, it should be booted all together.

With that said, Arsenal will host Liverpool on Thursday in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal. The winner will face Chelsea on February 28th at Wembley Stadium in London.

Cheers.

Yes their would be less sponsorship and tv money but they get enough from premier league. It would be a great opportunity for their junior ranks to gain exposure to a competitive competition.

  6. I never understood why EPL teams carried on playing in the EFL Cup once they left the EFL. They should remove the EFL place and the EPL teams. The EFL could then scrap the EFL trophy and instead allow all EPL teams to field a U23 side if they so wished.

The loss of revenue to EPL teams could be replaced by a very short EPL Cup.
