When I opened my computer this morning to catch up on today’s Arsenal headlines, there it was in bold print – the new drama surrounding Mesut Ozil. According to Mirror Sport, it has been leaked from within the Arsenal Football Club that Ozil and two unnamed first team players rejected taking the 12.5% pay cut for the next 12 months. It is being reported Ozil proposed a deferred payment scenario instead. More on that in a moment.
Today, Ozil’s critics are going crazy with this “revelation.” How can the team’s most expensive player, making $430,000 (USD) per week, refuse such a request they ask. How can he be so greedy and so self-centered they question. How will the rest of the team react to him going forward they argue.
Now, these are all good questions and concerns, and if they are based on fact, I will also have doubts about the German playmaker.
However, a couple of things need to be considered before jumping on the naysayers bandwagon. First, how and by whom was this information leaked from inside the club? Second, why weren’t the other two names leaked as well? And third, has anyone examined Ozil’s side of the story?
The club released a statement yesterday that made it sound like the acceptance of the pay cut had been a team decision. Of course, they wouldn’t mention any dissension within the club, however, you would have to wonder why would someone at Arsenal would even release this information. To me that’s just as concerning as the Ozil story itself.
Now, back to Mesut Ozil. If you take a look at his past record of charitable donations, the man has given millions to worthy causes around the world during his career. He has paid for over 1,000 children’s operations around the world, and has also funded a soccer facility for kids in Turkey. You have to give him some credit for being generous.
ESPN is reporting “sources close to negotiations tell them Ozil turned the club down because of a lack of effective communication over how the money would be used and the future financial implications, rather than for personal financial reasons. Talks remain ongoing with Ozil believed to be willing to take a higher pay cut than the 12.5% agreed elsewhere. However he believes the process has been rushed, with insufficient consultation involving lawyers or contract experts.”
So, if this report is accurate, why is there such a rush to judgment? Now, I’ve been very critical of Ozil over the past few years myself. He’s not the player he once was, and he is grossly overpaid. However, that’s no reason to bury him before the facts are all bright to the surface for further examination.
At the end of the day, I think we should commend those coaches and players who took the pay cut to help offset the financial burdens AFC are currently experiencing. It will be interesting to see how the club moves forward with transfers and contracts in the months ahead, especially if the 2019-2020 season cannot be completed.
It will also be interesting to see the next page to be written in the Mesut Ozil drama.
