Congratulations are in order for Stan Kroenke and his Los Angeles Rams for defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 on Sunday in Super Bowl LVI.. The 74-year-old owner of the Rams has now helped lift two Vince Lombardi Trophies previously as a co-owner and now as a full owner of the NFL Rams. To put the cherry of top, Stan won this year’s Super Bowl in the stadium he built in Inglewood, California. The price tag for this amazing venue is somewhere in the neighborhood of $5-6-billion (USD).
Kroenke’s sports empire has also won a NHL Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, and a MLS Cup with his Colorado Rapids.
So, obviously, Stan Kroenke knows what it takes to win major championships in the United States. He has the hardware to prove it, but does he have the gumption to win a major trophy in Europe?
Since 2011, when Stan became the principal owner of the Arsenal Football Club, the only “major” trophies added to the Gunners trophy cases has been four FA Cups. Now, I’m not diminishing the importance of the FA Cup, but when I think of a major trophy I think of the Premier League, the Champions League, or even the Europa League trophies.
Arsenal supporters’ reaction to Kroenke’s win on Sunday have been more hostile than friendly. His Super Bowl victory stirred up the normal reactions, calling Stan an absentee owner, someone only interested in AFC for the profits, and still cheap when it comes to opening his checkbook for Arsenal. Gooners see the success he is having in the States, but not in England. They see Arsenal as the lonely stepchild in the Kroenke empire.
Now to be fair, it has been reported the Kroenke group will spend big again this summer for Arsenal. Let’s not forget they did drop $150-million (USD) on last summer’s transfers, right? So, with another Super Bowl win in his pocket, maybe Stan will be inspired to expand his trophy case even farther by adding a major trophy from across the pond.
We know Stan Kroenke can’t be in two places at the same time, so he sends his son Josh to London to babysit Gaspar Edu and Mikel Arteta from time to time. It’s not the same as “Silent Sam” coming to town, but it does show some support. This was especially true when Kroenke ill-advisedly joined the European Super League last summer. When the sh*t hit the fan with Arsenal supporters, Josh immediately hopped on Stan’s private plane and flew to north London to help smooth things over. Ultimately, Kroenke listened to the fans and dropped out of the new league.
Okay, we know Stan is definitely hands-off when it comes to Arsenal, however on the flip side there are pro sports club owners in the States who are so involved they appear to be too hands on. Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks come to mind first. Cuban goes as far as sitting next to the Mavericks coaches and players during NBA games. Everyone wants an owner who is involved, but these two tend to cross the line, in my opinion.
So, at the end of the day, Kroenke is king of the NFL. LA loves him, the team loves him, and Rams fans love him. Just for a moment imagine the love Stan would receive in north London if he became more personally involved with our Arsenal, and lifted a major trophy for the Gunners in England.
One can only dream.
