I just finished reading a really good posting on Just Arsenal News written by a fellow American. He discussed how the American model for professional sports was attempting to make its way into European football through the European Football League. He mentioned how US leagues are “closed leagues,” with no relegation or promotion. In other words, once you are in, you are in. This was the  model the ESL leaders were using to start their new league.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, one of the main reasons I fell in love with European football was the way they protected the history and integrity of the game. The ability to move up or down through the football pyramid was so exciting to learn and to understand. It was a concept so strange, yet so intriguing.

From their beginnings, United States pro leagues never considered such an approach, and even today, with several of the big leagues having second tier systems, or minor leagues, in place, the idea of promotion/relegation is such a far fetched idea for Americans to wrap their heads around. When I discuss this concept with friends unfamiliar with soccer, they say, “why would we do such a crazy thing. It makes no sense.”

When I look at the current US pro leagues, I think Major League Baseball, the NHL and MLS could potentially provide a promotion/relegation system. The NFL has no feeder league to speak of, while the NBA has only a developmental league to draw from. How exciting would it be to see the Boston Red Sox or the Cleveland Indians fighting to avoid relegation at the end of the season? As it stands, teams at the bottom of their league standings at the end of the season just play out their schedules. They have nothing to compete for. I think American fans would love this type of competitive atmosphere at the end of the season, if they would only give it a chance and open their minds.

Will it ever happen? No, but it’s sure fun to think about.

Now, to wrap up this European Super League discussion, I for one am very happy the fans collectively stood up and challenged the European football elite. Their voices were heard, and they might have started their own football revolution in Europe. Maybe we will see some of these greedy owners sell off their clubs to new owners who will put the game above all else. Wouldn’t that be something to see?

Now, I don’t see the ESL going away any time soon. I believe Florentino Perez and his loyalists will keep looking for a way in. However, for me, the heart and soul of European football is the domestic leagues, the domestic cups and the Champions League. Clubs play their way up and in, or down and out. That’s the beauty of the sport we love and the system that has flourished for so many years!
