Thomas Partey just had the best game of his season to date v Manchester City on Saturday. Unfortunately for us, he has left the Gunners to be with Ghana’s national team to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations.
So, what will Mikel Arteta do to replace starter Partey and main back-up Mo Elneny in midfield during the AFCON? The tournament runs through February 6th. Plus, Ainsley Maitland-Niles appears to be heading out on loan to Roma, so this becomes a numbers game for Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal have five, or potentially six, very important matches to cover until Partey and Elneny return. Of course, when they actually return will will depend on how far their respective countries advance in AFCON.
In their absence, Granit Xhaka remains available, as does Albert Sambi Lokonga. However, after that the midfield pickings are slim.
Options for additional midfield cover:
This is just a thought, but a potential option. If necessary, what about sliding Kieran Tierney into Partey’s midfield slot with Nuno Tavares replacing the Scotsman at left fullback?
Or, could Sead Kolasinac fill-in once he gets fit and ready to play?
There is also the chance of Arsenal bringing in a midfielder during the January transfer window. PSG’s Georgino Wijnaldum seems to the one most mentioned.
In any case, I’m sure Arteta and his staff have a plan in place, however, it’s still fun to take a look at the options from this side of the pond.
Cheers.

I think our midfield is up to this. Delay AMN
Transfer for a couple of weeks. There is also
Pepe, give him some game time.
And yes a defender could be slotted into midfield, that’s what Ted Lasso did with great results
We need to focus on a striker and to extend Laca for two year. A one year contract will not interest him, unless big dollars.
