The coronavirus and its potential impact on Arsenal

The coronavirus is beginning to become a threat to most of the world. Italy has already quarantined parts of their country, plus Italian football matches have been suspended until at least April 3rd. Even Thursday’s Europa match with Wolves traveling to Olympiacos has been impacted. The game will be played behind closed doors.

Yesterday in the UK, the government told the Premier League, “based upon current scientific advice from the Government’s medical experts there is no rationale to close or cancel sporting events as things stand. We will remain in regular dialogue with sports governing bodies and broadcasters, ensuring they are in receipt of the most up to date guidance from the health authorities”

The Premier League, the government, and the country’s football broadcasters held preliminary discussions on Monday to determine what happens if PL games would be played to empty stadiums. One option included streaming games for free so supporters could still watch their clubs play. The meeting was was held by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

Obviously, this virus has turned the globe upside down. The global financial markets, the travel industry, and even energy sectors have been hit the hardest financially. Sporting events, and everything connected, could be next on the list of things to face the same hardships.

Here in the U.S., the coverage of the virus has turned political (what else is new), but still Americans are quite aware of the dangers and have cut back on travel, both domestically and internationally.

Stay vigilant, and stay healthy. In time, this too will pass.
