The day after hangover

We’ve all been there. Too many cocktails the night before, then the hangover the day after. That pretty much describes the way I feel this morning. The one exception, there was no alcohol involved, just a miserable ending to the match at Brighton and Hove.

When Pepe hit his screamer I thought okay, maybe this is the start of something. My bad again. The wheels came off, and instead of the Gunners moving ahead of Tottenham into 8th place in the table, we slipped to 10th.

Here’s what Mikel Arteta had to say post-match, “I think we did a lot of things today to win the game comfortably, but we haven’t competed like you have to compete in the Premier League. We gave the first goal away and we lost a few important duels afterwards, so I think it’s all our fault. It’s not the first time it has happened, and if you want to win games consistently at this level, it’s a must and non-negotiable. I think they competed for large parts of the game, but in crucial moments when you don’t, you pay the price and that’s it.”

There’s really nothing in this statement I would disagree with, however, when he talks about not competing, especially in critical moments, that’s what bothers me the most. Whose responsibility is that? Of course, it’s the players’ job to compete, and the manager’s job to make sure they compete. Am I right, or not? Arteta’s statement really worries me. It really goes to the core of the team’s problems. It comes down to having or not having the will to win at any cost. I just haven’t seen that type of commitment in the Gunners’ first two games after the restart.

Here’s something else that I don’t understand. Why isn’t Mesut Ozil on the pitch? Arteta says “he not ready to play.” Than why was he in yesterday’s 20 man team? Here’s our most expensive player, a World Cup winner, and a world class player riding the pines on the bench. What does Arteta have to lose by putting him in to the game? I mean really. I see no midfield spark, no creativity. The Arsenal forwards are trying to do all of the offensive creating themselves. They need Ozil’s brilliance to provide that spark and to create more chances. Get him on the pitch! We don’t have time to play head games with players! The clock is ticking…

So, now on Thursday we head to Southampton for another Premier League encounter. Playing the Saints on their ground is always an adventure. Again, this will be a must win for Arsenal if they have any hope for European football next season.

I just hope my hangover is gone by then.

Cheers, and stay healthy and safe!
